The semester has started and that means, at least for me, that the break and the Society of Jewish Ethics (SJE) Conference are already distant memories. However, before sliding into the routine of the year I wanted to take a moment to connect with you. Our conference this year was outstanding. There were great individual presentations in panel sessions; a roundtable on the contemporary human rights scene post-Dobbs from the perspective of Jewish ethics; a roundtable with the Society of Christian Ethics and the Society for the Study of Muslim Ethics on abortion; a conversation with author, Twitter personality, and rabbi Danya Ruttenberg; and Shabbat meals full of good food, wine, and great conversation. If you were there I hope this rekindles great memories. If you could not be there this year, I hope this gives you motivation for joining us next year.
One of the aspects of the conference that I am very proud of is the fact that we have scholarships available so that just about everybody who wants to, can come to the conference. There were a good number of first time attendees this year, and I hope that number continues to grow.
So, tachliss/brass tacks, the conference and the scholarships are made possible by the membership dues that you pay. Membership runs from October 1-September 30 of each year and will, from now on, be automatically renewed unless you cancel it.
If you have been a member in the past, please check to see that your membership category is current. You can do that by visiting the website and logging in at the upper right hand corner. Once you are logged in, scroll to “my subscriptions.” If your membership has expired, please make sure to renew it.
Check to make sure your membership category reflects your current status (student, retiree, income level, etc.) If your membership category is “Already a Member,” please note that this was a free category that applied only in 2021-2022 when we switched over to the new website after people had already paid their dues. If you are in this “already a member category,” please renew as a regular member.
If you have never been a member of SJE, and you would like to join, now is the time to do it!
Benefits of membership:
Discounted rates to register for the Conterence,
A subscription to the Journal of Jewish Ethics,
Access to resources from the SJE.
If you have not paid your 2022-2023 dues, please do that now so that our wonderful Society can continue. The conference co-chairs (Ranana Dine and Sarah Zager) are already plotting an even better conference for next year.
Thank you for your partnership in this Society. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, aryeh@aju.edu.
Best,
Aryeh Cohen
SJE President
